Her Majesty the Queen in Gloucester this morning.

I have photographed the Queen on many occasions during her visits to Gloucestershire. This is just a simple but pleasing head shot.

One of the best Royal Rota jobs I have done. Limited number of photographers but wall to wall celebrities. I photographed Phil Collins, Sir Ben Kingsley, Jeremy Irons, Gary Lineker and his new rather attractive wife, Dame Edna Everage, Philip Schofield, Martin Clunes, Joss Stone, famous news readers, the list goes on.

I admire Prince Charles and have photographed him many times and even spoke to him and shaken his hand. He is always game to have a go, and this pic shows him showing confusion during a visit to a shirt makers, much to the amusement of the workforce. I have been to Highgrove House twice, once for a Prince’s Trust event and once for a judging competition. I was the only photographer there and it was in the days of colour film. I photographed the Prince and Editor judging, and then when the Prince left he came over to me and shook my hand and said ‘I hope they come out’, I replied ‘so do I Sir or I’m out of a Job’ to which the Prince roared with laughter.

Camilla giving the crowd the OK when she won.
Prince Charles broke his arm whilst playing Polo and was taken to Cirencester Hospital. Over three days I camped out at the entrance with members of the worlds press reporting on visits by Princess Diana and the very young Prince’s William and Harry. I photographed Princess Diana driving her car in on her own and with the Prince’s in the back. On around the third day I remember the press secretary who had been briefing us, coming down and telling us that we were to be taken to the entrance to photograph Prince Charles leaving. I remember a slow casual walk becoming a full scale sprint to get the best spot. I did well and this was one of the pics.

I was covering the Badminton Horse Trials and was sat on the water jump. I remember photographing a faller, a Madeleine Gurdon who went on to marry Lord Andrew Webber, and knew it was a great pic. Two minutes later Princess Diana showed up and sat just to the left of us photographers on the water jump. Not only had I just photographed a dramatic horse falling picture but I now had Princess Diana in the bag as well, Job Done!

HRH the Princess Royal watches as punters shout for their horses at Gold Cup Day, Cheltenham Racecourse on Friday.
(PIC PAUL NICHOLLS) 14 MARCH 2014
This is one of my favourite Royal pics. The Princess Royal was watching the race on screen and was particularly stony faced. A punter in front of her was getting increasingly excited that his horse was going to win, so I quickly positioned myself so to see him and the Princess Royal over his shoulder. She remained stony faced until right at the last moment when she broke into the biggest smile when the horse won. This picture was part of the set of five pictures to win me the EDF Energy South West News Photographer of the Year 2014 Award.
