Terry Waite Repatriation

This is hostage Terry Waite landing after being released from being held captive. I remember having the flu and going from the cold runway into a warm hangar where my camera lenses steamed up and I frantically tried to demist them.

Gulf Repatriation

I have photographed many soldier funerals, but this was a soldiers repatriation at RAF Brize Norton, and was taken very early on in my career. I think it is still a very powerful image. I remember being on the back of a flat bed lorry with around 100 other press and tv cameramen, and all you could hear was camera shutters.

RTA

The Air Ambulance leaves the scene of the accident on the M5 at Junction 12, Quedgeley.
(PIC PAUL NICHOLLS)   28 JULY 2012

I have photographed many road traffic accidents (RTA), but have been fortunate to get the air ambulance twice which always makes the picture more dramatic. When I get a call to attend an RTA, I have to plan so not to get caught up in all the traffic congestion. Knowledge of country lanes and motorway bridges helps, especially when there is a major incident on the motorway.

This was late one night and involved waiting for hours. When the boat came in I remember wading into the ice cold River Severn floodwater which promptly went over the top of my wellies filling them up.

Fireman and Cat

A classic picture of a fireman rescuing a cat from a roof. This came about from chasing a fire engine when I was young and very keen.
