Tredworth Road Race

This picture is from the kids race at the Tredworth Road Race in Gloucester. This picture won me £3000 pounds in the Jessops/Northcliffe Newspapers Everyday National Competition. It won the Community Category. 50 images were displayed in an exhibition at an exhibition centre on the south bank in London. Three of my images were selected for the exhibition. The money is long gone unfortunately.

One in a Million

Alex Davis and his family were neighbours and friends and Alex was indeed ‘One in a Million’. Unfortunately Alex passed away. This story and my picture touched a lot of peoples lives both locally and nationally.

Paris Competition winners

A school had won a coupon collecting competition for a trip to Disneyland Paris and I accompanied them. Most stressful trip ever trying to photograph the various kids enjoying Disneyland. Problem was as soon as they got in the park they would disappear in different directions, so every two hours or so I would attach myself to a different small group. I was also on film then so I was carrying a bag full of gear and tons of rolls of film. When I got home I had to fill a supplement so I think I shot around 40 films, all of which had to be processed, filled, scanned and captioned. Nightmare. This picture was also a problem. We were to stop and just look at the Eiffel Tower, so I had to persuade the group and driver I needed five minutes to run off the coach with a child and a Disney character bear. Me, the kid, and mum ran to a spot. I placed her and took a couple of pics before being shouted at by a French Policeman. Translated it was ‘GET OFF THE GRASS’, but I had got my pic and we ran back to the coach. This pic says Disney and Paris and was the most important pic to get.

Valentines Day

Be my valentine’s: Morgan Mvula,4yrs,presenting his sweetheart Saskia Clifton-Godding,3yrs,with a single red rose. The couple attend the Jack and Jill Kindergarten in Gloucester.

A simple pic to illustrate Valentines Day. I went and bought a rose and got in contact with the Kindergarten. Clear background, colourful red jumpers, shallow depth of field on a long lens and a bashful kid. Works really well I think.

Iraq War

A local church was lighting candles for people affected by the Iraq War. I went along and posed this simple image of a young girl praying for the people of Iraq. Simple but powerful.

School Closures and Snow

Oliver O’Driscoll having fun on his sled in the snow beneath Rodborough Fort, Stroud, Gloucestershire.
(PIC BY PAUL NICHOLLS) 5 JANUARY 2009

School closures and snow, head for the hills because you can guarantee there will be children sledding but it is fraught with danger. Not being taken out by a sled but photographing children. Hopefully they will be accompanied by an adult, but not always. This guy was really going for it, but before I could do anything I had to ask permission. Luckily he had been provided with a mobile phone, and after showing him my press card he phoned his mother. I spoke to her, explained who I was and gave her numbers of colleagues who could clarify this. She phoned a colleague, who then phoned me to say I was clear to  take this guys photo. The effort was worth it I think.

Spring Lambs

(PIC PAUL NICHOLLS)   18 APRIL 2011

Kids and animals have caused me more stress than any other pictures, but if you get it right it is really rewarding. This is a simple pic of spring lambs being bottle fed by a visiting child. Isolate the subject with a clear background, long lens at F2.8 and hopefully a little bit of magic will happen. In this case I think it did.
