I had the great pleasure of working with Paul Nicholls from 1998 to 2002, when I was editor of the The Citizen newspaper in Gloucester, and Paul was one of the staff photographers.
Paul was a very highly valued member of the team. He displayed a sharp news sense, which regularly delivered great photos, such as the time he captured a fire crew delivering a burger and Coke via a cherry picker to a rooftop protester.
Paul was always conscientious, diligent and enthusiastic. He was very good at making members of the public feel at ease when they were suddenly plunged into the media spotlight. One notable example was the story of Cissy Townsend, an old woman who was facing eviction from her care home. Paul won her confidence and delivered a set of photos of Cissy leaving the home. Cissy died just three days later; it turned out that Paul’s were the last photos to be taken of her.
Paul proved himself to be alert to off-diary opportunities too. Once, he caught Princess Anne arriving at Gloucester Cathedral with an out-of-date tax disc on her car.
Paul was an excellent team player with an unfailing sense of humour (very necessary in a newspaper office). I am sure he would be an asset to any media organisation. Spencer Feeney, Editor, The Citizen 1995-2002, South Wales Evening Post, 2002-2012

“Paul has covered a large number of events across the City during my period of office and I have been hugely impressed by the quality of his work. He puts people at ease and creates images that are more than merely a representation of an event. I thoroughly enjoy working with Paul and am always reassured that any event he covers will produce images of the highest possible standard.

Paul work is always of an exceptional standard and I would have no hesitation offering my full support”. Councillor Chris Chatterton, The Right Worshipful Mayor of Gloucester
